Basket Weaving
Basket weaving can be traced back as earlier as the ancient Egyptians. Baskets have been used for centuries as containers for everything imaginable- clothing, seeds, food, transportation of materials and general storage. Baskets have made their way around the world and back again with early explorers. As explorers traded good, they also traded baskets. As slaves were brought to American from various parts of the world, they brought the techniques of basket weaving with them. These are just a couple examples of how various techniques of basket weaving have made their way around the world and even morphed into new techniques and versions of the classics.
This basket weaving project was completed by the period 2 Fine Craft class at Stoughton High School in
December 2016. The students were given the history of basket weaving. They were taught about the basic construction of baskets including the base, rim, sidewalls, lids and handles. They were then asked to weave their own basket using reeds and precut bases. Students were encouraged to draw on the history of basket weaving. These baskets were woven by 9th grader Karina Alves, Senior Alex Cusak, Senior Ryan Struck and Sophomore Hailey Apotherka.
Karin Alves was inspired to create this basket as a token of appreciation for her mom and all the love and support she has given.
Ryan Struck was happy to have the opportunity to draw on his Native American roots and create his basket. He is looking forward to continuing creating and exploring the traditional Native American style of weaving.

Spotlight on Senior Alecia Nunes
Alecia Nunes is a senior in the Fine Craft class this year. Here she is pictured with her cut paper design project. Cut paper designs have place in many cultures around the world. The fine Craft classes learned about these cultures and saw examples of the art they produce. Students were able to choose a theme and design they interested them. Alecia chose to focus on the idea of butterflies. She first created a flat sketch of a butterfly, then using the x-acto knife, carefully cut out the negative space. Alecia glued the cut out butterfly to her background paper making sure that the wings stayed unattached giving the appearance of fluttering wings. For Alecia's other project, she created a mobile of cute out butterflies that are strung together. When asked about her project Alecia said "They are for my Nana because she is one of my best friends and she has always loved watching butterflies fly. I think that the cut paper butterflies as a mobile mimic the fluttering of a butterflies wings."
